To this day, the residents of Lucknow dedicate a significant portion of their time and earnings to their kitchens. One notable feature of Lucknow is a neighborhood known as ‘Bawarchi Tola,’ where you can find a community of talented chefs. Additionally, there’s an entire street filled with the finest traditional eateries offering exquisite dishes from the city’s culinary heritage.
Join us for an evening walking tour, where we’ll guide you through some of these traditional establishments, allowing you to savor the best offerings on the menu. This is a guided tour that provides our own set of cutlery and basic dining tools, ensuring you can enjoy the finest dining experience without worrying about how to eat without a fork or how to clean your hands afterwards.
lst Stop : Mubeen’s Pasanda & Awadhi Pulao (thin meat ribbon / slivers taken from hind leg of a lamb or beef marinated with spices and yogurt for hours, set on a skewer and baked on open charcoal barbecue, served with Sheermal – a special baked bread made with milk, ghee, saffron and sprinkled with orange colour. Pulao is a fairer cousin of Biryani. Lucknow’s Biryani or better call it Pulao, is quite different to the one served in Delhi or Hyderabad, rather considered much superior to its two cousins. Traditionally it is flavoured rice cooked with Awadhi spices including saffron and special cuts of meat. Biryani in Lucknow is cooked by dum process, where pots are sealed to cook on slow fire).
2nd Stop : Tundey’s Kebab (finely minced meat, mixed with more than 160 secret Indian spices, herbs and raw papaya shallow fried on a special pan called ‘mahi tawa’ over charcoal fire. This preparation is served with Luckhnawi Paratha – a variety of bread made on inverted, round bowl with frequent spread of oil).
3rd Stop : Raheem’s Nihari Gosht (lamb meat chunks served in curry with special bread called Kulcha, that is made of fine flour and baked in earthen ovens set below the ground level).
4th Stop : Maulana Sweets (this shop prepares sweets in small quantity and stocks for a limited consumption, within a day. Their specialties include Kalakand, Rabri and Variety of Halwas, The process involves slow fire reduction of milk for hours and hours together, some varieties take as long as eight hours and involve a great labour).
5th Stop : Azhar Bhai’s Paan (a preparation combining betel leaf with areca nut, catechu paste, cardamom, cloves, slaked lime, rose pulp and many other condiments to flavour and freshen the breath after a hearty meal).
