Tea at The Tornos Studio

(By appointment, except on Sundays)

Tornos invites you to experience our unique afternoon tea at The Tornos Studio. We house an extensive collection of books and literature focused on Lucknow, particularly on the uprising of 1857-58. Guests are welcome to enjoy reading these materials or watching a film from our collection while savoring their tea.

Afternoon tea at The Tornos Studio is inspired by British tradition, a custom that remains popular in Lucknow with its significant Anglo-Indian community. We take pride in using our finest china and silver, creating a refined setting for engaging conversation with our guests.

Our typical tea menu features an assortment of delightful homemade treats, including scones, fairy cakes, assorted pastries, cookies, and, of course, classic cucumber sandwiches. We also often include a selection of traditional Indian tea-time snacks. These are presented on elegant cake stands and serving bowls sourced from London, including some exquisite china and silver from The Buckingham Palace’s souvenir shop. Many of our serving pieces have been acquired from royal households or at auctions both in India and abroad.

What makes the tea experience at Tornos Studio even more special is our in-house kitchen, Coquina, which prepares fresh artisan cuisine daily for our guests. Furthermore, our Darjeeling tea is an exclusive, handpicked variety sourced directly from Darjeeling, ensuring a premium experience.

All of this is offered to our guests as they immerse themselves in our library on the Indian Mutiny or enjoy a private film screening. We believe that afternoon tea at The Tornos Studio offers an elegant and relaxed way to spend your afternoon.

What is an Afternoon Tea ?

Afternoon Tea held significant social importance among the British in India, particularly in Lucknow, which was the seat of the British Resident and home to a considerable British and Anglo-Indian population.

While we often picture delicate cucumber sandwiches and scones as quintessential to afternoon tea, there isn’t a fixed menu. The offerings truly varied depending on the season, the location, and individual preferences. However, the tea itself was always the focal point, served from either a silver or china teapot, with great emphasis placed on its quality and proper brewing.
